Das aktuelle REBELLION Album ist aufgrund seines klaren, politischen Statements ein für die Band ungewöhnliches Album. Es handelt sich erneut um ein Konzeptalbum, welches dieses Mal die Zeit von der Französischen Revolution bis nach dem 2. Weltkrieg abdeckt. Die Kernaussage des Albums ist, dass Rassismus und Nationalismus Schuld an den Kriegen und der damit verbundenen Zerstörung und Vernichtung tragen. Auch wenn es negativ klingt, endet das Album mit positiven Tönen: Im letzten Song des Albums, “We Are The People”, wird die Hoffnung auf ein geeintes Europa, das den Nationalismus überwunden hat, deutlich.
Musikalisch kann man sich auf einen modernen Sound freuen. Bei “A Tragedy In Steel Part II: Shakespeare’s King Lear” wurde sich eher an Sounds und Methoden der alten Schule bedient. Für “We Are The People” wurde jedoch Uwe Lulis – seines Zeichens Gründungsmitglied von REBELLION und mittlerweile Gitarrist bei Accept – rekrutiert, der dem Album einen sehr modernen Sound verpasst hat, der vor Metal nur so strotzt. Und die Band, bei der sich das Besetzungskarussell in den letzten zwei Jahren gedreht hat, war mehr als begeistert.
In den ersten Songs klingen REBELLION wie immer, dann geht es für die Band jedoch ungewöhnlich weiter. Der Song “Vaterland” wurde von der deutschen Nationalhymne inspiriert, benutzt jedoch andere Lyrics und kritisiert so den Nationalismus der damaligen Zeit. In den folgenden Songs wurden andere musikalische Elemente und Harmonien integriert, um Themen wie die Schlacht von Verdun, die Shoa oder Kriegsgötter abzudecken. Uwe selbst schrieb den Song über den 2. Weltkrieg und spielte auch alle Gitarren – nun ja, fast alle, denn Simone Wenzel steuerte auch ein Gitarrensolo bei. Dieser Song ist also eine Art Zeitreise zurück zum klassischen Line-up des Albums “Miklagard – The History Of The Vikings Volume II”.

The new REBELLION album is quite unusual for the band because of its clear political message. Another concept album – covering the history of Europe from the french revolution to the end of World War II and beyond. The key message being that racism and nationalism are at fault for the wars and all the destruction and annihilation they brought. Even though ths might sound negative the album ends on a positive note: The closing song “We Are The People” contains hope for a united Europe free of nationalism.
The record sports a quite modern sound. While its predecessor “A Tragedy In Steel Part II: Shakespeare’s King Lear” was achieved using old-school sound and methods, the newest release strinkes a different not. Uwe Lullis – founding member of REBELLION and current guitarrist for Accept – helped to forge a modern sounding record bursting with metal. And, behold, the band saw that it was good.
The first songs sound like REBELLION always used to sound until it takes unusual turns. The song “Vaterland” was inspired by the German national anthem but changes the lyrics in order to criticise the ramping nationalism of the time around the wars. The following song sutilize other musical elements and harmonies to cover the battle of Verdun, the Shoa or gods of war. Uwe himself wrote the song dealing with World War II and played all of the guitars – or rather: most of them. Simone Wenzel contributed an extraordinary guitar solo as well. So this track might be considered another time travel to the not so distant time and line-up of the classic “Miklagard – The History Of The Vikings Volume II”.
